Champa Rice: The Grain That Transformed Southern China

In the eleventh century, a new variety of rice arrived in China from across the southern sea, and the agricultural history of the empire changed forever. The rice came from Champa, a kingdom on the coast of what is now central Vietnam, and it had two characteristics that made it uniquely valuable in the lower Yangzi: it matured quickly, and it tolerated drought better than traditional Chinese varieties. The result was a revolution in southern agriculture, a doubling of the effective growing season, and a population boom that made China the most populous state in the world. The introduction of Champa rice is a central chapter in the history of Chinese agriculture and a key development in the history of the imperial Chinese economy.

What Champa Rice Was

The kingdom of Champa (占城, Zhancheng) occupied the coast of modern central Vietnam from roughly the second to the seventeenth centuries CE. Among the goods that Champa produced, and exported to its Chinese trading partners, was a distinctive short-grain rice well adapted to the climate of coastal Vietnam and southern China.

Chinese agricultural writers of the period emphasized two qualities of the Champa rice. First, it matured quickly: traditional Chinese rice varieties needed 150–180 days from planting to harvest, while the Champa varieties could mature in as little as 100 days, and in some conditions as little as 60. Second, the Champa rice was more drought-tolerant than the long-season Chinese varieties, and could be grown on land too dry for traditional paddy. These characteristics made it particularly valuable in the lower Yangzi, where the water supply was uncertain, and made it possible to grow two or even three crops of rice per year on the same land.

The name “Champa rice” (占城稻, Zhancheng dao) appears in Chinese agricultural texts of the eleventh century, and the introduction is conventionally dated to the reign of Emperor Renzong of Song (1022–1063). How Champa Rice Spread

The new rice was at first grown experimentally by farmers in the Fujian and Zhejiang coastal regions. The Song government, recognizing the value of the new varieties, encouraged their cultivation through the distribution of seed and through agricultural extension. The prefects of Hangzhou, Wenzhou, Fuzhou, and other southern cities promoted Champa rice as a famine-prevention measure and as a way to increase the tax base.

The spread was gradual but transformative. By the Southern Song (1127–1279), the new varieties were widely grown in the lower Yangzi, and they had spread to Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, and the southeast. The Ming and Qing saw further diffusion, and by the eighteenth century the Champa-derived varieties were the dominant rice in much of southern China. The traditional long-season varieties continued to be grown in the richest paddy regions, where the high yield of the long-season crop justified the additional water and labor, but Champa varieties had become the staple of the majority of southern farmers.

The agronomic impact was enormous. With a growing season shortened by 50–80 days, farmers could grow a winter crop (wheat, barley, rapeseed, or beans) after the summer rice harvest, and they could plant a second rice crop in the late summer. The double-cropped rice-wheat rotation became the standard in the lower Yangzi, and triple-cropping became possible in the warmer southeast. The total caloric output of southern farmland roughly doubled, and the population that the land could support grew accordingly. The Song, Ming, and Qing censuses record extraordinary growth: the Tang census of 742 recorded roughly 45 million people; the Song census of 1100 recorded roughly 100 million; and the Qing census of 1800 recorded perhaps 400 million. The Champa rice was a major factor in this long-run growth, especially from the Song onward.

The Causes of the Song Agricultural Revolution

The introduction of Champa rice was the most famous of the agricultural innovations of the Song period, but it was only one of several. The Song also saw the spread of new iron tools, new water-lifting devices, new fertilizers, and new methods of cultivation. The combination is sometimes called the Song agricultural revolution, and it was, in its own way, as significant as the better-known Song industrial revolution in iron, ceramics, and shipping.

The causes are still debated. One view emphasizes population pressure: the rapid growth of the southern population from the Tang onward created demand for more food, and the agricultural innovations were a response. Another view emphasizes the role of the state: the Song government, faced with fiscal crisis after losing the north to the Jurchen, invested heavily in southern agriculture, promoted new seeds and new techniques, and built the infrastructure that supported the revolution. A third view emphasizes the role of trade: the Song commercial revolution created a market for agricultural products, and the introduction of Champa rice and other new seeds was partly a commercial response. Most historians accept some combination of all three.

The Limits of the Green Revolution

The Song agricultural revolution, although transformative, was not without limits. The new rice required more labor: double-cropping meant more planting, weeding, harvesting, and more careful water management. The new techniques required more fertilizer, and the Chinese farmer’s careful recycling of night soil, ash, and other organic matter became a defining feature of the late imperial agricultural system. The new varieties were also more vulnerable to certain pests and diseases, and the historical record shows repeated outbreaks of rice blast in the Song and later periods.

The most important limit, in the long run, was environmental. The expansion of paddy into the hills and marshes of the south came at the cost of deforestation, soil erosion, and the loss of natural wetlands. The lower Yangzi, in particular, saw extensive land reclamation in the Song, Ming, and Qing, and the consequences for the local ecology were sometimes severe. The same dynamic played out in the introduction of New World crops in the Ming and Qing, which opened the hillsides to sweet potatoes, maize, and peanuts but at the cost of serious soil erosion in some regions.

The Legacy of Champa Rice

The introduction of Champa rice was, in the long run, one of the most consequential agricultural developments in Chinese history. The doubling of the effective growing season allowed the population to grow from perhaps 100 million in 1100 to perhaps 400 million in 1800, a fourfold increase. The rice surplus supported the rise of great commercial cities in the Yangzi delta, the growth of the silk, cotton, and porcelain industries, and the long-run prosperity of the southern economy. The state was able to draw on the southern surplus to feed the northern capitals and the frontier armies, and the Grand Canal carried the surplus north in a continuous flow that shaped the political and economic history of the empire.
