Chinese Architecture and Engineering: From Timber Frames to the Great Wall
For more than three thousand years, the builders of imperial China raised palaces, temples, tombs, walls, canals, bridges, and pagodas that still set the standard for monumental architecture in East Asia. Their work was guided by a coherent and remarkably consistent set of design principles: a preference for timber framing over load-bearing walls, a modular system of standardised brackets that allowed carpenters to assemble complex structures without nails, an obsession with axial symmetry and cosmological orientation, and a deep conviction that buildings — like cities, like dynasties — should embody the moral order of the universe. The result was a built environment that looked different on the steppes of the north and in the rice paddies of the south, but that shared, across twenty centuries and many dynasties, a recognisable Chinese grammar of wood, tile, and stone.
This article surveys the architecture and engineering of imperial China as a single, continuous tradition. It begins with the underlying principles: the timber frame, the dougong bracket set, the rules of proportion, and the cosmological ideas that decided where a building stood and which way its door faced. It then turns to the great building types — palaces, capital cities, walls, religious structures, tombs, gardens, and the engineering of water. Finally, it traces the dynasty-by-dynasty evolution of these ideas, from the great unifications of the Qin and Han through the cosmopolitan Tang, the technically inventive Song, the Mongol Yuan, and the Ming and Qing, whose surviving monuments still define Chinese cities today. The Principles of Chinese Building
Although Chinese architecture is famous for its variety, almost every imperial building — whether a peasant’s hall or a palace of the Son of Heaven — was built according to a small set of deep principles. These principles were articulated in technical building manuals, codified in imperial regulations, and reinforced by cosmology and Confucian ritual. To understand Chinese architecture is to understand them.
The Timber Frame
The most fundamental decision Chinese builders made, very early, was to build in timber rather than masonry. Where Roman, Byzantine, and later European builders developed the post-and-lintel and then the vaulted stone arch, Chinese builders developed a sophisticated timber frame in which a skeleton of wooden columns and beams carried the entire load of the roof. The walls of a Chinese building were not load-bearing; they were simply panels of wattle-and-daub, brick, or wood inserted between the columns. This decision had enormous consequences.
It made Chinese buildings lighter, more flexible, and more easily repaired than stone buildings. It also made them more vulnerable to fire — a constant preoccupation of Chinese cities — and meant that very few timber structures from before the Tang dynasty have survived. The famous Yingxian Wooden Pagoda of 1056, treated in detail in our article on the tallest surviving wooden pagoda, is the world’s tallest standing wooden building precisely because it is unusually well preserved. Most other timber buildings have been rebuilt many times.
The timber frame, because it relied on interlocking joints rather than nails, could be partly prefabricated. Carpenters would assemble the columns, beams, and brackets flat on the ground, then raise them into position with ropes, pulleys, and a small army of labourers. A skilled crew could erect a temple hall in a matter of months. It also meant that buildings were understood as assemblies of standardised parts rather than as unique stone masses. The same column could appear in a hall in Luoyang and a temple in Hangzhou, two centuries apart.
The Modular Bracket Set: Dougong
The single most distinctive technical element of Chinese architecture is the dougong (斗拱), the modular bracket set that sits between the top of a column and the bottom of the roof beam. A dougong is a stack of wooden blocks, shaped like inverted stepped pyramids, that transfers the load of the heavy tiled roof evenly down through the column. In its developed form, it could contain dozens of interlocking wooden pieces, fitted together without a single nail, and was capable of supporting eaves that projected several metres out from the building.
The dougong performed three functions at once. Structurally, it distributed the roof load. Practically, it allowed the eaves to be deep and protective — a critical advantage in the rainy south and the snowy north. Aesthetically, it gave Chinese buildings their characteristic silhouette: a sweeping, layered roof, lifted slightly off the columns by a band of intricate wooden brackets that caught the light in different ways throughout the day.
The dougong system was standardised by the Song dynasty. The technical manual Yingzao Fashi (營造法式, “Treatise on Architectural Methods”), compiled by the official Li Jie in 1100 and promulgated in 1103, set out the proportions of the dougong in terms of a basic unit called the cai (材). Every dimension of every bracket and beam was a fixed multiple of the cai, which in turn was a fixed multiple of the standard column. This meant a carpenter in Fujian could, in principle, read a blueprint from a builder in Shanxi and find the right pieces in his own stock. The same system was refined in the Qing manual Gongcheng Zuofa (工程做法, “Engineering Methods”), promulgated in 1734, which fixed the dimensions of Qing imperial construction in even more detail.
Axial Symmetry and Cosmological Orientation
Chinese imperial architecture was almost always symmetrical about a central north-south axis. The most important buildings — palace halls, temple gates, ancestral shrines — faced south, toward warmth and light, and were approached by a sequence of courtyards aligned on the axis. This axial, symmetrical plan was not just aesthetic. It was cosmological. The emperor, as the axis mundi between Heaven and Earth, was understood to occupy the centre; the further a building lay from the central axis, the lower its status.
The classic layout was a series of rectangular courtyards, walled and entered through gates in the middle of each side. Major halls sat on the central axis at the north end of each courtyard. Lesser buildings were arranged in pairs to east and west. The plan produced a sense of dramatic progression: gates, then a courtyard, then a more imposing hall, then another gate, then a still grander hall — each threshold marking an increase in ritual importance. The Forbidden City in Beijing is the most elaborate example of this axial scheme ever built, but its underlying logic was already present in the Han and Tang capital cities two millennia earlier.
Orientation mattered. Buildings associated with the emperor faced south. Ancestral halls faced south. The main hall of a Buddhist temple usually faced south, with the principal Buddha image placed on the central axis at the north end of the hall. Tombs, by contrast, faced away from the population centre — usually south, with the tomb mound in the north so that the spirit could be drawn toward a distant mountain. These rules were codified in Kaogong Ji (考工記, “The Artificers’ Record”), a technical chapter of the Zhou Li (周禮, “Rites of Zhou”) that was treated as a binding manual for imperial construction for the next two thousand years.
Hierarchy, Colour, and Roof Type
A Chinese building’s importance could be read at a glance from its roof, its colour, and the number of creatures perched on its ridge. The hierarchy of roof types ran from the most prestigious to the least: the wu-ting (庑殿) hip-and-gable roof, with a curved sweep on all four sides, was the most prestigious, reserved for the most important buildings such as the Hall of Supreme Harmony; the xie-shan (歇山) half-hipped roof, with a horizontal ridge and hipped ends, was the second rank; the ying-shan (硬山) gable roof, the simplest form, was used for ordinary houses and side buildings. The chuan-dou (穿斗) post-and-beam frame (a regional frame type, not a roof type) was a lighter and quicker-to-erect alternative to the northern tailiang frame, and it became standard for domestic architecture across the south.
Colour was a regulated marker of rank. Yellow glazed tiles were reserved for the imperial palace and certain temples. Green tiles were used for princely residences. Blue tiles were used for ritual altars to Heaven. Grey tiles were the everyday colour. The most sacred buildings — Buddhist temples, Taoist shrines — could also be permitted bright reds and greens, and these became the canonical colours of religious architecture in late imperial China.
Decorative roof figures (zhiwujia, 吻獸) lined the main ridge. Their number and arrangement were rigidly fixed by rank: the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City, for example, has ten. A minor official’s hall was permitted only a handful. The same hierarchy governed the number of dougong per column, the depth of the eaves, the number of steps in front of the platform, and the kind of stone balustrade.
The Great Building Types
Once the principles of design had been fixed, Chinese builders applied them to a recognisable set of building types. The same grammar of timber frame, dougong, and axial layout appears in palaces, temples, tombs, and gardens across more than two millennia.
Palaces
The imperial palace was the most elaborate and most heavily regulated building type in the Chinese tradition. It always sat on the central axis of the capital, occupied the highest ground, and was surrounded by a high red wall. Within the wall, a sequence of courtyards, gates, and halls led to the throne hall, where the emperor held court. The Forbidden City, built between 1406 and 1420 for the Yongle Emperor of the Ming, is the only Chinese imperial palace to survive largely intact, and it is the canonical example. But earlier capitals also had elaborate palace complexes: the Han capital at Chang’an had the Weiyang Palace, where the emperor held court before a hall that, by Han accounts, could seat ten thousand. The Tang palace at Daminggong, just outside the walls of Chang’an, covered an area of several square kilometres and included separate palaces for the emperor, the empress, the heir, and the court musicians.
In addition to the formal palace, the imperial household also maintained pleasure gardens, hunting parks, and retreats. The Qing emperors, for example, used the Mountain Resort at Chengde (避暑山莊) in the hills north of Beijing as a summer retreat and as a place to receive Tibetan and Mongol envoys. The resort mixed Han Chinese garden design with Tibetan lamasery architecture and Mongol yurt-camps, a deliberate architectural statement of Qing imperial universalism.
Temples, Halls, and Religious Architecture
Chinese religious architecture shared many features with palace architecture — axial plan, timber frame, dougong — but differed in some crucial details. Buddhist and Taoist temples were usually laid out on a south-north axis with a sequence of gates, halls, and finally a main hall containing the principal image. The main hall of a Buddhist temple was often wider and taller than its secular equivalent, to accommodate a large standing or seated Buddha. Pagodas, see our Chinese pagodas, often stood on the central axis opposite the main hall, and the relationship between hall and pagoda was a defining feature of Chinese Buddhist monasticism.
Confucian temples followed a similar plan, but the principal “image” was not a statue but a spirit tablet of Confucius himself. The Temple of Confucius at Qufu, rebuilt many times since the Han dynasty, became the model for Confucian temples throughout East Asia, including those built in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. A network of state Confucian temples was maintained in every prefecture and county seat of imperial China. Their form, like that of imperial palaces, was rigidly prescribed by imperial regulation.
Taoist temples tended to be smaller, more picturesque, and more closely integrated with natural features — a mountain, a cave, a spring. The Temple of the Eight Immortals at Xi’an, the White Cloud Temple in Beijing, and the Taiqing Gong at Lao Mountain are all characteristic examples.
Tombs
Chinese imperial tombs were a building type of their own. The earliest large imperial tombs are the pyramid mounds of the Han dynasty at the foot of Mount Li, near Xi’an, where the tomb of Emperor Wu of Han is still visible as a low cone of earth. The Han tombs were surrounded by walled enclosures containing subsidiary burials of officials and concubines, and were often accompanied by stone guardian figures and a que (闕) — a pair of tall ceremonial gate-towers that became a standard feature of imperial tomb architecture.
The Tang dynasty favoured a different tomb type. The tomb of Emperor Taizong at Zhaoling, on the north slope of Mount Jiuzong near Xi’an, is approached by a long Spirit Way (神道) lined with stone guardian figures, and the tomb mound is a low, round earthwork behind a tall grassed terrace. The Tang imperial tomb model was imitated throughout East Asia, including in the Japanese imperial tombs at Nara and Kyoto.
The most elaborate imperial tomb complex ever built is the Ming Tombs (十三陵) north of Beijing, and especially the tomb of the Chongzhen Emperor and, more spectacularly, the tomb of the Wanli Emperor. The Wanli tomb took six years to build (1584–1590) and contains a sequence of stone halls, with carved dragons on the ceilings, leading to a deep marble-floored underground palace. The Qing Eastern and Western Tombs near Beijing follow the same model, with the Eastern Tombs at Zunhua and the Western Tombs at Yixian together containing the mausoleums of nine Qing emperors.
A separate tradition, originating in the Han dynasty and reaching its peak in the Tang, was the rock-cut tomb, in which an entire palace, complete with painted walls and clay figures of attendants, was carved into a cliff face. The tomb of Princess Yongtai near Xi’an, the cave-tombs of the Tang imperial family at Qianling, and the Yongxing Tombs in Sichuan are characteristic examples.
Gardens
Chinese garden design was a high art in its own right, distinct from but closely related to architecture. The classical Chinese garden aimed to compress the experience of travelling through famous landscapes into a few hectares of carefully arranged rocks, water, plants, and architecture. The rock — a weathered limestone boulder from Lake Tai, or a volcanic rock from southern China — was the most important element, treated as a sculptural object and arranged to suggest distant mountains, sea cliffs, or fantastic peaks. Water, ideally a natural lake or spring, was the second essential. Architecture — a viewing pavilion, a covered walkway, a study — was scattered through the garden in a deliberately asymmetric plan, in deliberate contrast to the axial symmetry of palaces and temples.
The Humble Administrator’s Garden (拙政園) in Suzhou, originally laid out in the early sixteenth century and rebuilt many times since, is the largest of the surviving classical gardens of Suzhou and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Lingering Garden (留園) in the same city, the Master of the Nets Garden (網師園), and the Garden of the Master of the Nets are smaller but more concentrated examples. In Beijing, the Qing imperial gardens at the Summer Palace (頤和園) and the Yiheyuan at Chengde adapted the southern garden tradition to a much larger scale and combined it with lake, hill, and temple architecture.
Walls and Fortifications
China is famous, in the West, for the Great Wall — but the Great Wall is only the most ambitious of a long tradition of Chinese wall building. Almost every Chinese city, large or small, was surrounded by a wall, usually of rammed earth faced with brick or stone. The standard form was a rectangular plan, with a gate tower in the middle of each side, corner towers at the four corners, and crenellations along the top. Inside the city, a drum tower and a bell tower marked the centre.
The Great Wall itself evolved over more than two millennia. The earliest walls were built by the warring states of the Zhou era, and the Qin emperor connected them into a single defensive system in the late third century BCE. The Han extended the wall deep into Central Asia; the Ming rebuilt it in brick and stone in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Canals, Bridges, and Hydraulic Engineering
Chinese engineering achievements in the handling of water were as spectacular as those in architecture. The Grand Canal, which by the Sui dynasty linked the Yellow River basin with the Yangzi and eventually with Hangzhou, is the longest artificial waterway in the world and a masterwork of hydraulic engineering. Its construction, extension, and operation are treated in our article on the construction of the Grand Canal. The Dujiangyan irrigation system near Chengdu, designed by the Qin-era engineer Li Bing and his son in the late third century BCE, has been diverting water from the Min River into the Chengdu plain for over 2,200 years without interruption; its engineering is analysed in our dedicated article on Dujiangyan. Bridges, including the famous Anji Bridge (赵州桥) at Zhao County in Hebei, built in the early seventh century, demonstrated that Chinese builders were as inventive in stone as they were in timber.
Engineering Achievements by Dynasty
The high-level grammar of Chinese architecture — timber frame, dougong, axial symmetry, hierarchy of roof and colour — was remarkably stable. What changed from dynasty to dynasty was the technical sophistication, the scale, and the specific forms that builders favoured.
The Pre-Imperial Foundations: Shang, Zhou, and Warring States (c. 1600–221 BCE)
The earliest surviving Chinese architecture is known almost entirely from archaeology, because no wooden building from before the Tang has survived. The bronze-age city at Erlitou in Henan, associated with the late Xia and early Shang, included a large palatial platform, rammed-earth walls, and a complex of bronze foundries. The later Shang capital at Yinxu near Anyang, excavated since the 1920s, revealed the foundations of royal palaces built on rammed-earth platforms, with column bases carved from bronze and stone.
The Zhou period added the ritual order. The Kaogong Ji chapter of the Zhou Li set out the proportions of the ideal capital city, the ideal palace, and the ideal hall, in a series of ratios based on the standard unit of the cai (later re-used by the Song building code). The Zhou capital at Haojing, near modern Xi’an, is known only from texts, but it is described as a roughly square walled city with a palace on the central axis and ancestor temples on either side.
By the Warring States period (475–221 BCE), the major states of the central plains were building on a heroic scale. The Chu capital at Jinan, the Qi capital at Linzi, and the Yan capital at Ji (in modern Beijing) were all fortified cities of tens of thousands of inhabitants, surrounded by walls of rammed earth, and centred on palace complexes. Walls and watchtowers were extended along the northern frontier to keep out the steppe nomads. The Qin state, in particular, was famous for its engineering: the general Meng Tian connected existing frontier walls into a single defensive line, the forerunner of the Great Wall.
The Qin Unification (221–206 BCE)
The Qin dynasty was short, brutal, and transformative. The First Emperor, having unified the warring states in 221 BCE, set out to impose a single architectural order on the empire. He built a network of imperial highways — the famous chidao (馳道) with measured lanes and planted trees — and a system of standardised post stations. He connected the existing frontier walls into a single defensive system, the early Great Wall. He built an imperial palace complex at the new capital, Xianyang, across the Wei River from modern Xi’an, of which only the platform foundations survive. He built his own enormous mausoleum near Lintong, guarded by the famous terracotta army, with a bronze-cast model of the empire above it and a mercury-painted map of China inside it.
The Qin also began the systematic exploitation of the water resources of the empire. The general Zhang Qian’s expeditions to Central Asia had revealed the value of the Hexi Corridor for the supply of cavalry horses, and the Qin built irrigation canals and military colonies in the newly-conquered southwest. The most famous Qin engineering project, however, was the Dujiangyan irrigation system in Sichuan, which the engineer Li Bing completed in 256 BCE (still three years before the formal unification) and which has irrigated the Chengdu plain ever since. The Han Dynasty (202 BCE – 220 CE)
The Han inherited the Qin bureaucratic and architectural order and added to it a Confucian ideology of hierarchy and a taste for the monumental. Han architecture is known mostly from archaeology, but the surviving tombs, the carved stone gate-towers (que), and the contemporary accounts in the Hanshu give a clear picture. The Han capital at Chang’an, outside modern Xi’an, was one of the largest cities in the world at its peak in the second century BCE. It was laid out on a rough grid, with the Weiyang Palace in the southwest and the imperial ancestral temples in the north. The Han imperial tomb complex at the foot of Mount Li, near Xi’an, included the enormous tomb mound of Emperor Wu (still a conspicuous feature of the landscape) and a number of stone que of which fragments survive.
Outside the capital, the Han period saw the development of multi-storey timber buildings, the widespread construction of stone and brick tombs, and the introduction of the first recognisable pavilions and gate-towers. The Han also began the long process of extending the Great Wall westward into the Hexi Corridor and beyond, and built the first imperial roads to the western regions, enabling the caravans of the Silk Road to travel under relatively continuous Chinese control.
The Period of Division (220–589 CE)
The four centuries between the fall of the Han and the Sui reunification are usually treated as a period of political fragmentation, but they were also a period of enormous architectural innovation. The single most important change was the arrival of Buddhism in the first century CE and its gradual transformation from a foreign cult into a mass Chinese religion. With Buddhism came the pagoda — derived from the Indian stupa but adapted to Chinese timber and brick construction — and the Buddhist cave temple, with its monumental rock-cut Buddha images.
The major surviving cave temple complexes of this period are the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang in Gansu, begun in the fourth century and continuously added to over the next thousand years; the Yungang Caves near Datong in Shanxi, begun under the Northern Wei in 460 and abandoned in 494; and the Longmen Caves near Luoyang, begun in 493 under Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei. Each is essentially an architecture of rock-cut facades, with timber-framed porches added in front, and each combines Indian Gandharan and Central Asian influences with a gradually more Chinese decorative vocabulary.
The timber buildings of the period have not survived, but the numerous tomb models, the carved stone funerary pillars, and the contemporary descriptions in the Luoyang Qielan Ji (洛陽伽藍記, “Record of the Buddhist Monasteries of Luoyang”) give a clear picture. The southern capital of Jiankang (modern Nanjing) was, at the beginning of the sixth century, one of the largest cities in the world, with extensive Buddhist temple complexes on the northern edge of the city. The northern capitals at Pingcheng (modern Datong) and Luoyang were similarly dominated by great Buddhist monasteries.
The Sui and Tang Dynasties (581–907 CE)
The Sui dynasty reunited China in 589 and, almost immediately, embarked on the construction of the Grand Canal, the largest civil engineering project in the world up to that point. The Sui also rebuilt the Luoyang palace complex and the Daxingcheng (“Great New City”) in Chang’an, a deliberately gridded city that became the model for East Asian capital planning for the next thousand years. The Tang dynasty took the Sui’s urban and architectural foundations and raised them to a peak of cosmopolitan grandeur. The Tang capital at Chang’an was the largest city in the world in the eighth century, with an estimated population of close to a million people living within its walls. Its gridded plan, with the imperial city in the north, the two markets in the east and west, and over one hundred walled residential wards (fang), became the model for the Japanese capital at Heian-kyō (modern Kyoto) and influenced the planning of capitals throughout East Asia.
Tang timber architecture has not survived above ground, except for a few small buildings such as the main hall of the Foguang Temple (佛光寺) on Mount Wutai in Shanxi, built in 857. This hall, which is the oldest surviving major wooden building in China, gives a precious glimpse of the developed Tang timber tradition. It has a single-storey hipped-and-gabled roof, a sophisticated dougong bracket system, and a row of stout wooden columns, with a clay-tile roof of deep eaves. The 67.3-metre-high Great Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) at Ci’en Temple in Xi’an, originally built in 652 and rebuilt in brick in 704, is the largest surviving Tang-era pagoda. Tang builders also raised the Anji Bridge, the world’s first open-spandrel segmental arch bridge, in the early seventh century.
The Tang court was the high point of Chinese cosmopolitan culture, and its architecture reflected that. Foreign merchants, Sogdian, Persian, and Arab, lived in the western market of Chang’an; their Zoroastrian, Nestorian Christian, and Manichaean temples have left no traces, but the architecture of the period incorporated foreign elements freely. The Tang imperial tomb at Qianling near Xi’an, the joint burial of Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian, preserves a fine example of the long Spirit Way with its stone guardian figures, modelled on the earlier Han tradition.
The Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE)
The Song dynasty is often called the most technically inventive dynasty in Chinese history, and the description applies as well to architecture as to anything else. The Song capital at Bianjing (modern Kaifeng) and later the Southern Song capital at Lin’an (modern Hangzhou) were the largest and most economically active cities in the world in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Song painters and poets have left a vivid visual record of the dense, multistorey, balconied timber architecture of these cities — architecture that, sadly, has not survived, because the Song capitals were sacked and largely destroyed in the twelfth-century Jurchen and thirteenth-century Mongol invasions.
What has survived from the Song is the technical literature. The Yingzao Fashi (1100) of Li Jie is the most detailed, but it is not the only surviving Song building manual. It set out, in minute detail, the proportions of the dougong bracket set, the standard column heights, the roof loadings, the timber grades, and the labour requirements. Modern engineers have been able to reconstruct Song timber buildings from these specifications and have found them structurally sound.
Song pagoda building reached its peak with the construction of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (應縣木塔) in 1056. Standing 67.5 metres tall, it remains the tallest surviving wooden building in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its structure, treated in our article on the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, is one of the great feats of pre-modern engineering. Song builders also constructed a number of important iron pagodas, including the Iron Pagoda at Bianjing (1044, rebuilt), and a series of brick pagodas that imitated the timber frame in carved brick. The Song also perfected the construction of multi-storey commercial buildings, market halls, and the first recognisable playhouses — a long narrow building with a stage at one end and seating arranged in tiered galleries along the sides.
The Song was also the dynasty that saw the maturation of Chinese garden design, especially in the southern cities of Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Yangzhou. The Yuan Ye (園冶, “The Craft of Gardens”), a garden manual by Ji Cheng published in 1631 but reflecting an essentially Song-derived tradition, codified the rules of rock, water, architecture, and borrowed scenery that have defined the Chinese garden ever since.
The Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368 CE)
The Mongol Yuan, despite its relatively short duration, left an indelible mark on Chinese architecture. The Yuan capital at Dadu (大都, “Great Capital”), on the site of modern Beijing, was a new city, planned in 1267 and built in a gridded pattern, with the imperial palace in the centre. Its site and dimensions were preserved by the Ming when they rebuilt the city as Beijing in the fifteenth century. The Yuan also built the first version of the White Stupa at Miaoying Temple in Beijing (1279) and supported the construction of Tibetan-style Buddhist temples throughout the empire.
Yuan engineering was, like the Mongol Empire itself, a synthesis of Chinese, Central Asian, and Persian traditions. The Mongol court employed Muslim astronomers, engineers, and architects, and the result is visible in the astronomy instruments of the Yuan and the early Ming, the use of reinforced arches in the Yongle Bridge at Beijing, and the importation of Central Asian decorative motifs.
The Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 CE)
The Ming restored Han Chinese rule and, with it, a conscious return to the architectural forms of the Tang and Song. The great Ming building projects were the rebuilding of Beijing as the new imperial capital under the Yongle Emperor (r. 1403–1424), the construction of the Forbidden City (1406–1420), the rebuilding of the Great Wall in brick and stone along its present course, and the Ming Tombs (begun 1408).
The Forbidden City is the most perfectly preserved example of a Chinese imperial palace ever built, and the canonical example of the axial, hierarchical, courtyard-based palace plan. Its construction, layout, halls, and modern rediscovery are treated in our dedicated article on the Forbidden City. The Ming rebuilt the Great Wall in brick and stone, raised the iconic watchtowers, and added a continuous brick pavement along much of its length. Most of what the modern visitor sees at Badaling and Mutianyu is Ming work.
The Ming also expanded the Grand Canal to its final form, extending it south to Hangzhou and rebuilding many of its locks and canal-side granaries. The Qing took over the Ming system largely intact.
The Qing Dynasty (1644–1912 CE)
The Qing inherited the Ming capital at Beijing and made relatively few changes to the Forbidden City itself, but added important new architectural complexes: the Mountain Resort at Chengde (built from 1703), the Summer Palace (largely rebuilt in the nineteenth century), the Eastern and Western Qing Tombs, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing (rebuilt in its present form in 1890), and the Temple of Earth in the north of the city. The Qing also rebuilt many of the southern cities — Suzhou, Hangzhou, Yangzhou — in a hybrid style that combined the best features of the Ming with new influences from the imperial court.
Qing engineering was most visible in two great projects. The first was the completion of the Grand Canal system, which by the eighteenth century carried grain shipments of tens of millions of shi (a shi was about 60 kilograms) per year from the southern rice bowl to the northern capital. The second was the consolidation of the Great Wall, which by the Qing had become an internal boundary rather than a frontier, since the Manchu rulers themselves came from beyond it.
The End of the Imperial Tradition
The architecture of imperial China did not end with the fall of the Qing in 1912. The Republican era saw the construction of Western-style public buildings, banks, and offices in the foreign concessions of Shanghai, Tianjin, and Wuhan, but the traditional Chinese building continued to be built in the countryside, in the form of village houses, ancestral halls, and small temples, until the upheavals of the twentieth century. Even today, the surviving timber buildings of the imperial era, from the Forbidden City in the north to the classical gardens of Suzhou in the south, remain the single most important legacy of pre-modern Chinese architecture to the world.
